AVHCD has two "benefits" over MP4: It specifies a set of standard resolutions and data rates so that clips are guaranteed to be playable on consumer equipment such as BluRay players. AVCHD specifies a set of folders and metadata files that allow a single clip to span multiple files. This means it's able to record long clips even if the video takes up more room than can be held in a single file on a typical camera memory card.
